Purple City Disco is a 5 Piece funk and RnB band from Edmonton AB, featuring Conor Wall (vocals), Karina Farina (keyboards/vocals), Melvin Kratky (guitar), Peter Joshua (drums) and Scott Love (bass).
Purple City, the group’s local homage to an Edmonton urban legend, can be seen at night if you stare into the floodlights long enough at the legislative grounds. If you know, you know. But what about the DISCO ?
PCD was originally formed in 2017 as “Disco Porn” by members Scotty Amos(Love) on bass, guitarist Melvin Kratky and former drummer David Blouin. The trio connected over their shared musical influences and love for funk, disco and RnB. The band soon solidified its lineup by adding lead vocalist Conor Wall and classically trained keyboardist and supporting vocalist Karina Farina.
The band would go on to record an release two singles and a live music video as Disco Porn, as well as playing a handful of local shows around Edmonton. But after the pandemic and a temporary hiatus, a fresh start was needed and the decision was made to rebrand and change the name to Purple City Disco in fall of 2021.
“Keeping Disco in the name was important.” Says Amos the band’s bassist who goes by stage name Scott Love. “It was influential to our writing and image, but for us Disco was never purely about a sound, but a vibe. Disco is that place that everyone wants to be at, having a great time.”
PCD debuted under its new moniker for the first time to a packed house at The Buckingham on Whyte avenue , opening as direct support for local favorites Carter & The Capitals. It was also the last time the original 3 members would share the stage together. As in early 2022 the band and drummer Blouin parted ways and in April , Purple City Disco officially announced Peter Joshua as their new stick man behind the skins. Joshua made his debut with the band opening for Electric 6 at The Starlite Room (Edmonton) in late April and has been an integral part of the writing process since.
“I think when we added Peter, it really just took our live performance to the next level. His touring experience goes way beyond anything the 4 of us have done in the past, and we are just really grateful to have him on board with us going forward.” says guitarist and lead riff writer Melvin Kratky.
Heavily influenced by Funk and RnB, the bands sound has evolved over the years yet still manages to include, as keyboardist Karina Farina puts it “a few musical surprises”. Always pushing forward the band strives to bring a captivating experience to live audiences with each performance more memorable than the last.
Purple City Disco just capped off a year that saw them share the stage with bands Boney M. , Five Alarm Funk, Electric 6, Moontricks and Carter & The Capitals.
Currently PCD are back in the studio at Red Bear Records. Working with Audio Engineer Brett Reid, the band is recording their next single “Rent Free” , set for release later this winter. Reid also produced Purple City’s first two singles “Moonsugar” and “Could It Be You” released in 2021 and are available on all major music platforms.
